New Zealand Exterior Cladding Types And Their Advantages And Disadvantages

When planning or building a new home, many of us will spend hours smearing on different shades of white paint or choosing the perfect kitchen countertop. But choosing an exterior cladding is a key decision that will affect how you feel about your home in the next few years and its resistance to the elements.

There are five main types of exterior cladding, which are:
  • Weather Board (Advantage: flexible, rarely leaking, easy to maintain, lightweight, environmentally friendly materials. Disadvantage: it needs to be cleaned and painted every five years, and it will be mildewed, deformed and changed in a humid environment all year round. Fragile, poor fire performance)
  • Cedar (Advantage: the color is beautiful, it has the ability to resist insects, the insulation is good, the material is environmentally friendly. Disadvantage: similar to the weather board, it needs to be maintained once every five years or so. , the wet place red shirt wood needs more careful maintenance, poor fire performance)
  • Brick (Advantage: Good thermal insulation performance, little water leakage, good sound insulation performance, basically no maintenance, partial bad replacement, easy fire resistance. Disadvantage: it takes up a large construction area (because the brick is thick), the material is not environmentally friendly.) You can buy cheap and good quality bricks from Aubricks, which is one of the best nz brick supplier. There are different kind of bricks in terms of color, size, and type. You may also request for brick-laying service.
  • Hardi Plank (Advantage: composite material, fire retardant, easy to install, light weight, insect-resistant, anti-mildew. Disadvantage: although the plate is high in hardness but relatively fragile, if it collides with a hard object, for example It is easy to crack the whole plate, it can not be repaired locally, only the whole piece can be replaced, which will cost you a lot.)
  • Plaster, this is the “freak” in the New Zealand market, because many people mentioned that Plaster’s house does not even ask for the price. This is due to historical reasons. A lot of people think that Plaster is basically a representative of the leaky house in New Zealand.(Advantage: beautiful appearance on the exterior cladding of the house, extremely fast construction of the external wall, basic insulation performance, and cost savings. Disadvantage: it may cause leaking problem. Cracking, so it must be painted and maintained frequently)

In addition to the above five common exterior cladding materials, there are:
  • Concrete cladding, rarely seen, exterior wall materials used in luxury homes or high-end apartments
  • Iron, aluminum, galvanized steel cladding, rarely seen, usually used in rural or temporary shed
  • Pure natural stone exterior cladding, rarer than the above two, using pure natural stone to polish and cut into a block wall
  • Pilot materials, such as bricks made of extremely environmentally friendly plant fiber materials, or foam materials, etc., which do not appear on the market
